Biographies of Intellectual Disability in the Global South

We are currently seeking funding for a pioneering comparative study of the lives of 120 people with Intellectual Disabilities in four locations across the Global South:

  • Calicut, Kerala, India
  • Cape Town, Western Cape Province, South Africa
  • Porto Allegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
  • Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

The project will introduce a step-change to our cross-cultural understanding of intellectual disability through:

  • A groundbreaking range and depth of ethnographic work
  • Intensive application of participatory and inclusive research methods
  • A new anthropological method for analysing cultural and intersectional variation in developmental trajectories of adults
